The problem with the smart car is not the rigidity and crumple zones, its the mass, or lack thereof… you hit anything with substantially greater mass and the g-shock is going to be far greater in the Smartcar… that is what would kill you. The lack of large crumple zones to dissapate energy (relying more on the rigidity of the shell) makes matters worse. At least they point this out in the video.
There was an accident between an H2 and a lincoln town car 97. Surprisingly, the lincoln was less damaged, and the driver was ok with a cut under his eye. The H2 was in better condition, but not so much the car.
